El Salvador Hotels: Price Fixing Allegation Dismissed

The Superintendency of Competition has stated that there is insufficient evidence to determine alleged anticompetitive practices due to price agreements between four hotels in offers to the state.

From a communication from the Superintendence of Competition in El Salvador:

The Board of the Superintendency of Competition (SC) has ruled that it has not been demonstrated that there was anti-competitive practice in the form of a price agreement between the companies Hoteles y Desarrollos, Sociedad Anónima de Capital Variable; Hoteles e Inversiones, Sociedad Anónima de Capital Variable; Hoteles de Centro América, Sociedad Anónima de Capital Variable, y Compañía Hotelera, Sociedad Anónima

On November 15, 2012, the SC launched an official investigation into these hotel companies for the alleged act of agreeing prices for food services for coffee break at $10 per person, and packages for seminars / corporate lunches and coffee breaks at $32 per person.

El Salvador: Anti-Competitive Practices in Construction

An investigation is being launched into possible collusion between two construction companies who took part in the tender to make improvements to Migration facilities.

From a statement issued by the Superintendency of Competition:

October 30, 2017. The Superintendency of Competition has started an investigation to determine a possible agreement between two construction companies that participated in the public tender corresponding to improvements to facilities belonging to the General Directorate of Migration and Immigration at the borders posts of El Poy, La Hachadura and San Cristóbal. The possible agreement is typified as anti-competitive practice in article 25, letter c), of the Competition Law. 

Rice Producers to be Fined for Anti-Competitive Practices

June 2017

Twelve rice processors in El Salvador have been sanctioned for having set up an anti-competitive agreement for pricing for rice drying and threshing services.

The economic agents sanctioned are: Arrocera Omoa S.A. de C.V., Arrocera San Francisco S.A. de C.V., Agroindustria Centroamericana S.A.

Anticompetitive Flour Practices Denounced

June 2016

Agroindustrias Gumarsal has denounced to the Superintendency of Competition in El Salvador alleged anticompetitive practices in the flour sector.

From a statement issued by the Superintendency of Competition:

The Superintendency of Competition this morning received a complaint from the legal representative of Agroindustrias Gumarsal requesting the initiation of disciplinary proceedings for anticompetitive practices in the flour sector.

Alleged Anticompetitive Practices in Hotel Industry

November 2012

In El Salvador the Crowne Plaza, Real Intercontinental, Sheraton and Hilton President Princess are under investigation for allegedly fixing prices.

A statement by the Superintendence of Competition (SC) reads:

The Superintendence of Competition (SC) has initiated an investigation against four hotels for the allegedly engaging in anticompetitive practices by having agreement between competitors to fix prices of food services for events. This practice could affect and alter the conditions of competition for food and hotel services accordingly to purchasers of these goods.
