El Salvador Seeks Renewable Energy Sources

The Government is working on legislation that would facilitate the creation of renewable power plants under 20 MW in the country.

The new rules, which will be ready in six months to a year, are aimed at communities to use their own resources and profit from them, said Luis Reyes, executive secretary of the National Energy Council (CNE).

"Authorities said another purpose of encouraging renewable energy sources is to be less dependent on oil. Data from the CNE states that energy produced from thermal sources in El Salvador represents 40% to 50% in average for the past 10 years," reported Laprensagrafica.com.

It has been estimated that in the next six years more than 900 MW of additional power will be generated from renewable sources.

A study produced in conjunction with American Cooperation Agency (USAID) revealed that "... from this year until 2021 it is expected that generation capacity will grow by 145.7 MW in energ from hydropower sources, by 102 MW from geothermal sources and 380 MW using natural gas.

In its plan to foster renewable energy production, the National Energy Council (CNE) plans to install the country’s first solar power plant in 2016.

Luis Reyes, CNE’s executive secretary, remarked that they intend to install a concentrated thermal solar energy, which differs from the technology known as photovoltaic panels.
