El Salvador: $2.3 Million for River Banks

Work on the Lempa River Bank could start next week and be ready in late May.

The works are being done to repair 30 meters of the river bank which gave way last year due to heavy rains, and some additional 20 meters.

Saul Avelar, chairman of the MAG's infrastructure division, told La Prensa Gráfica: "This embankment has allowed the inhabitants of the Bajo Lempa area to know when they have to evacuate the zone to avoid the loss of human life, even though material losses sometimes cannot be avoided."

Fedecrédito to Finance Construction of Municipal Markets

The Federation of Credit Unions in El Salvador hsa signed a $20 million loan with the IDB for the construction and renovation of municipal markets.

Macario Armando Rosales, president of Fedecrédito said that funds from the Inter-American Development Bank will be directed to the municipalities through long-term loans.

El Salvador Invest in Flood Prevention Works

A number of public tenders were announced covering $2 million in flood prevention works in San Salvador.

The processes are being handled by the purchases office of the United Nations Development Programme. Roberto Góches, Public Works Vice Minister, commented that "what we do in six months, they do it in two and a half; this is shorter, more transparent and less expensive".

El Salvador: $40 Million for Rural Roads

The 23-kilometer highway between Aracato and Chalatenango will require an investment of $8.9 million. This construction project is slated to be the next project put out to bid by MOP.

The Department of Public Works (MOP) has $40 million in loans from the $60 million that the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank (BID) lent to El Salvador.

El Salvador Awards Less Public Works

April 2009

In the first quarter of 2009, contract awards for public works declined by 25% when compared to the same period in 2008.

According to the Salvadoran Construction Industry Chamber (CASALCO) in an article published in Elsalvador.com, of the total investment planned for the first quarter of the year, only 37% of the projects were awarded, a figure lower than last year when 63% of the work was awarded for the first three months of the year.
