Eco-tourism, is different from the traditional niche with which Guatemala has been recognized nationally and internationally.

It is an approach that favors sustainability, through contemplation of the natural environment and experiences that produce a greater awareness among travelers.

In general, ecotourism is seen as an activity that is governed by the fundamentals of corporate environmental responsibility, which also manages to enhance the wellbeing of local communities reflected in the structure and operation of firms (usually SMEs) groups and cooperatives that are dedicated to providing travel services closely related to nature and craft industry.

The International Ecotourism Society defines it as "responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the welfare of local people".
