Economic Activity Shows Signs of Recovery

After in May this year and in the context of the economic crisis, the IMAE in Guatemala registered a -12% year-on-year variation, during June 2020 the contraction of production was lower, reporting a 9% fall compared to the same month in 2019.

In the current economic crisis resulting from the spread of covid-19, the activities that have most boosted the drop in production are trade, tourism and transport, reported the Bank of Guatemala.

The official report states that "... During June 2020, economic activity measured by the IMAE estimate registered -8.6% variation rate compared to June 2019 (3.2%).

This behavior was explained by the result experienced, mainly, by the economic activities of Trade and vehicle repair; Accommodation and food service activities; Manufacturing industries; Education; Transport and storage; Construction; and Other service activities such as sports, recreation and leisure; personal services (laundry, hairdressing, beauty salons, among others); as well as artistic and entertainment activities.

On the other hand, the series of the trend cycle registered -7.7% y-o-y variation (4.2% in June of the previous year)
