EU Requirements on Food Safety

In order to export food to the EU companies must establish efficient processes for traceability, product withdrawal and recovery.

This was explained Valentin Diaz, a specialist from the European Union in Nicaragua who gave a workshop entitled "Trainer of trainers in traceability, withdrawal and recall of products, aimed at the food industry."

The aim is "... to prepare trainers for traceability, product recovery, good agricultural practices and good manufacturing practices for companies," said Diaz.
"... What it does is seek an improvement in quality conditions, improved sanitary and phytosanitary conditions in all countries, in order to get the best results out of the Partnership Agreement."

The EU and Central America have had an association agreement since 2003, but over the past year they have started talks aimed at deepening the relationship and setting up a free trade accord.
