U.S. Promotes Sale of Healthy Snacks in Schools

An announcement has been made of new nutritional standards to be implemented in schools across the country, which include foods groups such as whole grains, low-fat dairy, fruits, vegetables and protein.

The Secretary of Agriculture of the United States, Tom Vilsack, announced that under new nutrition standards to be applied in schools across the country, Smart Snacks in School, students will have a greater choice of healthy foods.

According to Vilsack nothing is more important than children's health and welfare. Parents and schools should work hard to provide healthy options in school cafeterias and food vending machines.

Since 2010, The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act has mandated the Department of Agriculture (USDA) to set nutritional standards for all foods sold in U.S. schools, these regulations will be published during the first week of July this year.These new standards include foods such as whole grains, low-fat dairy, fruits, vegetables and protein.
