Drywall: Business in Central America

Drywall imports in the countries of the region in 2017 exceeded $65 million, and more than 65% of purchases were made by companies in Costa Rica, Panama and Guatemala.

From the report “Drywall Market in Central America” compiled by the Business Intelligence Unit at CentralAmericaData:

Last year, imports of drywall and gypsum board and similar products in the region exceeded 30 million m2. According to the report, Costa Rica and Panama together represent about 50% of regional purchases abroad.

Regarding the imported volume, the report explains that last year more than 250 thousand tons of drywall products were purchased, and companies in Costa Rica, Panama and Honduras monopolized about 66% of the total purchased by the region.

Regarding last year's regional imports, the report explains that 40% of the total value purchased by Central American countries was collected by five companies.

The figures show that during 2017, in the Costa Rican market, three companies represented 97% of foreign purchases of drywall products; in Panama, four companies represented 72% of imports.

In the case of Guatemala, three companies represent 70% of the total of imports and in El Salvador two companies bought more than 80% of the total imported during the last year.

San Pedro Sula: Gypsum Board Factory

August 2011

With an investment of $22 million of which 75% has been contributed by Honduran businessmen, the company GypCen will be the first in the region to produce gypsum boards.

The plant, which has the capacity to produce 4 million boards a year, will supply the Central American market, which uses 12 million boards annually.

U.S. based Caspian will build a gypsum board factory in the country and distribute the product in Central America.

The representatives of the company, Catamaount Group LLC, said it is very probable that the plant will be located in Choloma, which is near Puerto Cortes, facilitating the export of the product.
