Dominican Republic: Tourist Arrivals Stagnating

Between January and September 2018 and the same period in 2019, the number of tourists who arrived in the country did not report significant changes, behavior in contrast with the increases reported years ago.

The accumulated arrival of non-resident visitors via area to the Dominican Republic in the period January-September 2019 shows a total of 4,987,698 travelers, amount that is like the amount recorded in the same period last year, when 5,009,417 non-resident passengers entered the country, informed the Central Bank.

The report explains that "... Within this result, non-resident Dominicans experienced a 14.6% year-on-year variation (99,497 additional travelers) largely offsetting the cumulative reduction of 2.8% recorded by non-resident foreigners, equivalent to 121,216 visitors.

Regarding the particular case of the arrival of non-resident passengers to the Dominican Republic (foreigners and Dominicans) in September 2019, it is observed that the same was 323,662 visitors, which meant a 41,706 passenger reduction (-11.4%) compared to the same month in 2018, as a result of the year-on-year decrease of 16.6% in the arrival of non-resident foreigners (50,062 less passengers than September 2018), of which 35,752 correspond to Americans), since the line of non-resident Dominicans experienced an annualized growth of 13.0%, or 8,356 more visitors than in September 2018, partially attenuating the year-on-year reduction in the arrival of foreign tourists.

Adding the influx of resident travelers, the total arrival of resident and non-resident passengers by air during the period January-September 2019 was 5,503,125 passengers, for 0.1% year-on-year variation, which represented 5,345 additional passengers compared to the same period in 2018.

Tourist Arrivals Keep Increasing

October 2018

From January to September of this year, the Dominican Republic registered the arrival of 5 million tourists, 6% more than the figure reported in the same period in 2017.

The Central Bank of the Dominican Republic reported that the influx of non-resident visitors in the period January-September 2018 registered the historic figure of 5,009,417 passengers, being the first time that this number of non-resident travelers is reached during the first nine months of the year, arriving 297,931 additional travelers compared to the same period of 2017, representing an accumulated year-on-year growth of 6.3%.

August 2018

From January to July of this year, the Dominican Republic recorded the arrival of 4.1 million tourists, 5.9% more than was reported in the same period in 2017.

The report details that the tourist flow, in accumulated terms for the January-July period of 2018, registered 4,106,474 non-resident visitors who came into the country through the different international airports, that is to say 227,140 additional travelers with respect to the same period in 2017, making the year-on-year rate growth 5.9%, reported the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic.

Tourist Arrivals Up 6% in I Semester 2018

July 2018

From January to June of this year, the Dominican Republic registered the arrival of 3.4 million tourists, 6% more than was reported in the same period in 2017.

In the month of June 2018, the records show a total arrival of 586,807 non-resident passengers by air, of which 497,997 were foreigners and 88,810 were non-resident Dominicans, representing growth of 7.5% with respect to the same month in the year 2017, keeping the Dominican Republic as the main tourist destination in the insular Caribbean. Within this result, the foreigners segment recorded an annualized increase of 6.3%, while non-resident Dominicans experienced a variation of 15.4%. 

Tourist Arrivals Up 6% up to May 2018

June 2018

During the first five months of 2018, the Dominican Republic recorded the arrival of 2.8 million tourists, 6% more than was reported in the same period in 2017.

From a Report by the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic:

The arrival of non-resident passengers by air to the Dominican Republic, including foreigners and Dominicans, registered a year-on-year growth of 7.0% in the month of May, reaching a total of 506,178 passengers, equivalent to an increase of 33,290 passengers with respect to the same month of the previous year. Within this result, the segment of foreigners presented an annualized variation of 6.0% (24,867 additional tourists) and non-resident Dominicans experienced an interannual increase of 13.7% (8,423 additional passengers).
