Diapers in Central America: 5% Increase in Imports

During the first quarter, the import value of diapers and similar items in countries in the region amounted to $71 million, 5% more than the purchases made in the same period in 2017.

Imports by country 
From January to March of this year, the main buyer of diapers and similar items in Central America was Honduras, with $15 million, followed by Panama, with $13 million, El Salvador, with $12 million, Nicaragua, with $11 million, Guatemala and Costa Rica, with $10 million each. 

Variation of regional imports 
Between the first quarter of 2017 and the same period in 2018 the value imported into Central America increased, rising from $68 million to $71 million, which is equivalent to a 5% increase. 

For the years in question, regional purchases made from Mexico increased by 4%, rising from $31 million to $33 million.

Origin of imports 
During the first three months of the year, 46% of the value imported from Central America came from Mexico, 18% from the US, 2% from Peru and 2% from China.  

The USA is the country of origin of Central American imports that grew the most in the period in question in the last seven years, as in 2012 it represented 11% of the total value purchased and in 2018 this figure reached 18%.

Central America Buying More Diapers in Mexico

Between 2016 and 2017, purchases of diapers and similar items made by the Central American countries in Mexico grew by 5%, going from $120 million to $126 million.
