Diapers: $77 Million in Regional Purchases

From January to March of this year, the countries of the region imported $77 million in diapers and similar items, 2% more than in the same period in 2019, with Guatemala, Nicaragua and Costa Rica being the markets that increased their purchases the most.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
In the first three months of the year, the main buyer of diapers and similar items in the region was Guatemala, with $15 million, followed by Panama and El Salvador, with $14 million each, Honduras, with $13 million, Nicaragua, with $11 million and Costa Rica, with $10 million.

Regarding recent developments, during the first quarter Guatemala reported a 20% increase, followed by El Salvador with 19%, Costa Rica with 18% and Nicaragua with 13%.

Panama and Honduras were the only markets in the region to register negative year-on-year variations, which amounted to -5% and -12%, respectively.

Variation in Regional Imports
Between January and March 2019 and the same period in 2020, the value imported into Central America increased by only 2%, from $76 million to $77 million.

For the periods in question, regional purchases from Mexico increased by 4%, from $40 million to $42 million.

Origin of Imports
During the first three months of 2020, 54% of the value imported from Central America came from Mexico, 11% from the US, 4% from China, 35 from Colombia and 2% from Peru.

Mexico is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most for the period in question over the last eight years, since in 2012 it represented 42% of the total value purchased and in 2019 it reached 54%.
