From January to September 2019, the countries of the region imported $227 million in diapers and similar items, 6% more than in the same period in 2018, with Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama being the markets that grew the most.

Panamanian Companies, Main Buyers
In the first nine months of last year, the top buyer of diapers and similar items in the region was Panama with $47 million, followed by Honduras with $44 million, Guatemala with $38 million, El Salvador with $36 million, Nicaragua with $31 million and Costa Rica with $26 million.

Regarding recent developments, for the period in question, Guatemala reported a 15% increase, followed by Nicaragua and Panama, with 6% in each case, El Salvador, with 4%, and Honduras, with 0.2%. Costa Rica was the only market in the region that registered a negative variation, of -5%.

Variation in Regional Imports
Between January and September 2018 and the same period in 2019, the value imported into Central America increased from $213 million to $227 million.

For the periods in question, regional purchases from Peru increased by 6%, from $5.8 million to $6.2 million.

Origin of Imports
During the first nine months of last year, 51% of the value imported from Central America came from Mexico, 11% from the USA, 2% from Peru and 2% from China.

Mexico is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most for the period in question over the last eight years, since in 2012 represented 43% of the total value purchased and in 2019 reached 51%.
