Cup of Excellence in Costa Rica

Coffee producers have until March 25 to submit samples in time for the competition.

After not having it done last year due to lack of financing, the Cup of Excellence competition returns, sponsored by Alliance for Coffee Excellence (ACE).

In a first stage, national tasters select the best among participant coffee samples.

"On the next phase, done by international tasters, the coffee is rated once again and the best is chosen. The top 10 will participate in an electronic auction offered to buyers," reported Nacion.com.

55 coffee samples were selected to participate in the competition that ends on May 13.

17 international judges selected the samples that will be offered to international buyers in the electronic auction to be held on June 21.

"In this auction small batches of coffee (15 to 60 bags of 60 kilos) are sold and although prices get very high in relation to the New York Mercantile Exchange, the producers argue that the most important aspect is the international promotion of these quality grains. " reported the Nacion.com

“Cup of Excellence” will Select Best Coffee in Costa Rica

For a week starting from May 9 a group of national and international tasters will be choosing Costa Rica's best coffee.

Judges from Brazil, the United States, Japan, Germany, Holland, England, Russia, Norway and New Zealand will participate in the decisive stage of Cup of Excellence competition. The winning selections of grain varieties will be auctioned on the internet on June 21.

The price, achieved in the Cup of Excellence auction in Nicaragua, beat those achieved in El Salvador, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Honduras.

The special 100 pounds of coffee produced by Maria Amparo Castellano was sold in the Cup of Excellence 2009’s electronic auction in Nicaragua for $3,105 per 100 pounds.

Thirty-two judges from different countries will come together until May 22 in Nicaragua to select the best coffee at the Cup of Excellence competition.

The final stage will take place in Estelí, where participating coffees will be valued in the search for potential buyers, and the best coffee in Nicaragua will be selected.
