Costa Rica's North West Seeks Financial Support

Tourism businesses in the province of Guanacaste have requested more action from the country's government.

The requests from the Guanacastean Tourism Association (Caturga in Spanish) include greater international promotion and the creation of a seasonal financial support plan for companies.

As of August 2010, tourist numbers were up on 2008 and 2009 but the visitor profile is different with lower average spending, according to Prensalibre.cr.

The European Union will assist Banana growers from Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific with $259 million.

These resources are intended to make the sector more competitive.

Such initiative is in response to an agreement struck in December 2009 between the EU and other banana exporters, mostly Latin Americans, which sought to reduce the preferential treatment given to ACP countries.

Nicaragua: New line of credit for rural micro businesses

The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) granted a $2 million credit to Fundeser to finance small farmers and micro businessmen from both rural and urban areas.

This loan was granted to the Foundation for Socio-Economic and Rural Development and is a part of the expansion of a previous contract. Fundeser has a network of agencies in 22 municipalities.

Steven Stone, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) representative in Honduras said the bank will do all it can to support measures that avoid economic turmoil.

The IDB is the principal institution in providing economic aid to Honduras. Stone said that economic chaos would mean more unemployment, greater poverty and the collapse of production.
