Costa Rican Pineapple has Problems in the US

Pineapple shipments had ripening problems in the United States, jeopardizing the access of the fruit into that market.

Friday, May 29, 2009

The Commercial Intelligence Office of the National Production Council (CNP) of Costa Rica issued a warning to producers, stating that the fruit is ripening in United States with a brown color both on the skin and in the pulp, when it usually ripens to a yellow color.

Journalist Marvin Barquero wrote for Nacion.com: "This condition deteriorates the quality of the fruit and makes it unfit for commercialization and this can damage the prestige achieved by the country regarding its pineapple and it opens the market for other competitors, warned the Commercial Office of the CNP."

The United States represents 43% of the pineapple export volume from Costa Rica.
