Costa Rican Airport Has New Operator

Starting today, Houston Airport takes charge of the operation and administration of the Juan Santamaría International Airport.

The consortium, lead by Houston Airport, the world's sixth largest airport operator, obtained the endorsement of the Costa Rican authorities, becoming, starting today, the airport administrator and responsible for the expansion project currently on the works.

"We have confirmed the transference of all activities under the conditions demanded by Costa Rican laws. The Technical Council on Civil Aviation, known as Ctac, read the report and approved the change", reported Minister Karla González, in a article. "She also said that it is a radical change in the operation and construction of the airport. She assured that this new administration contributes experience in commercial operation and in new business development".

The loan had been offered to the new managing agent of Costa Rica´s international airport, Houston Airport System Development Corporation, and they were in the thick of the financing process.

The Houston Airport System consortium will become the new airport administrator in December, replacing Alterra Partners.

Yesterday, the Office of the Comptroller General authorized the transfer of the management contract that was held by Alterra since 2001.
Before finalizing the transfer, Houston Airport System Development Company (HASDC) must pay the debts that Alterra had with banks creditors of the airport.

Alterra drops legal suit over Costa Rica airport contract

Alterra, the company that operates Costa Rica's Juan Santamaría airport, said it would drop its legal claim against the authorities as part of a package that would transfer its responsibilities to a consortium headed by Houston Airport System (HAS).

Jeffery Scheferman, president of the HAS Development Corporation, said that the case would be closed for his company too.

Key week for modernization of Costa Rica airport

This week could hold the key to the modernization of the Juan Santamaría international airport in San José, Costa Rica.

The authorities gave Alterra, the airport's private operator 60 days to come up with a plan to conclude pending works. The deadline expires Wednesday.
