Costa Rica to Export Organic Melon and Watermelon

The first foreign sale of the fruits was carried out by the company Melones de la Península, which sent 1,500 kilos to Europe by air and 10,000 kilos by sea.

After the organization Kiwa BCS Limitada granted the certification of organic product, in a first stage Melones de la Península exported 1,500 kilos during two weeks, by air, between both varieties (melon-yellow honey dew and watermelon-quetzali), as well as approximately 10 thousand kilos by sea in the same period.

Suk Lin Ajú, Commercial Manager of Melones de la Península, explained that "... This first export of organic melon and watermelon really motivates us and makes us proud as a company, since it goes together with our mission to promote sustainable production systems and to deliver healthy products to consumers."

Pedro Beirute Prada, General Manager of the Foreign Trade Promotion Agency of Costa Rica (PROCOMER), added that "... for the institution it is very satisfactory to support companies such as Melones de la Península, which carry innovation and sustainability in every detail of their production. "We invite more national companies to join these efforts, so that together as a country, we take the competitiveness of our export sector to another level and continue doing business with purpose."

The PROCOMER statement adds that "... The certification of this first shipment of organic melon and watermelon was issued by the organization Kiwa BCS Limitada, which analyzed the plantation of 2 hectares on the farm Rancho Cenízaro, participant in the project. According to the Commercial Manager of Melones de la Península, part of this production was also destined for the local market, "we are interested in placing part of the volume in Costa Rica, so we are making efforts to open this market.

The price for a box of melons in presentation of 24 pounds was $13, a box of watermelon weighing 37 pounds cost $16, while a sack of pumpkins weighing 45 pounds was sold in international markets at $12.
