Costa Rica fine tunes commercial strategy for Asia

The strategy for entering the Asian market will start in 2009 with the negotiation of FTAs with China and Singapore, with the expectation of completing them before Mayo 2010.

"The first round with China will be held on January 19, and will be an important investment opportunity, while with Singapore it will be a parallel process with a partner that could draw us closer to other countries in the region, such as Malaysia and Thailand," indicated the Minister of Foreign Trade, Marco Vinicio Ruiz.

Costa Rica and Singapore Close FTA Negotiations

Both countries confirmed the agreement, after finally finding common ground in the last remaining issue: financial services.

In the last negotiation round, which took place in Costa Rica from January 8th to 15th, both parties accorded all the texts of the treaty. The only issue remaining was a pending proposal related to investment services, which was solved later via phone communication between both Ministers.

Costa Rica to negotiate FTA with Singapore

On Tuesday, Costa Rican President Oscar Arias and his counterpart, President Sellapan Rama Nathan of Singapore agreed to start the process, during a visit the Asian country.

An agreement with Singapore has been rumored for some months now, ever since the Minister of Foreign Trade (Comex), Marco Vinicio Ruiz, spoke of the possibility. However no government official had spoken of this formally.

Chile helps Costa Rica with China FTA

Chilean experts are giving support to Costa Rican authorities to prepare for the FTA that the Government plans to begin negotiating with China in less than six months.

During the visit of Chilean president, Michelle Bachelet, cooperation mechanism in place were reaffirmed, such as support for trade negotiations, said the Costa Rica minister of Foreign Trade, Marco Vinicio Ruiz.
