Costa Rica: Tourist Arrivals through Liberia Up 33%

In 2016 1,182,123 tourists used the Daniel Oduber airport, 33% more than in 2015, generating an average per capita expenditure of $130 per day.

According to estimates by Coriport, the airport management company, "... from Fridays to Mondays the Daniel Oduber airport receives between 30 and 33 flights per day, while between Tuesdays and Thursdays at least 18 arrive there. On average those passengers stay in Costa Rica for nine days and spend about $130 per day."

Ennio Cubillo, Director General of Civil Aviation, told Nacion.com that "... this growth has been higher than the amount recorded in the Juan Santamaria airport. "It is very important for the country's tourism, we have to think not five, but 20, 30 or 40 years ahead."

In December airport authorities announced that the  work will begin in January on a series of constructions estimated at $10 million to expand the terminal's capacity by 20%.

Tourists Costa Rica Spend Less Than Before

The number of tourists arriving in the country has increased, but now they spend less per day than they did in the boom years.

While in 2008, 2.1 million tourists visited the country and spent $2.1 billion, in 2012 2.3 million arrived and only spent $2.2 billion.

In 2008, each visitor spent about $1,041 in the 11 days that their stay lasted, however, in 2012 the average consumption dropped to $947.
