Costa Rica: Self Sufficient Electricity Generation

A new regulation on quality of electricity includes the interconnection and operation of micro and mini generators using renewable sources for their own consumption.

Thursday, April 3, 2014

It will allow users to install on their properties, wind power, biomass and / or solar equipment, in order to meet their own electricity needs and they would be able to deliver surplus production to distribution companies, to be consumed at a later date (kWh Exchange).

From a statement issued by the Regulatory Authority for Public Services:

The Board of the Regulatory Authority has approved a new regulation to control the planning, operation and access to the National Electricity System (SEN by its initials in Spanish). This regulation, which replaces the one issued in 2001, establishes the technical and commercial conditions under which access of users to the national transmission and distribution is permitted.

The regulation establishes guidelines to be considered in the operation and development of SEN, in order to meet domestic demand at optimum cost, maximize renewable generation and minimize thermal generation, among other things.
