Costa Rica Seeks to Recover Air Connectivity

The government is negotiating with Peruvian Airlines direct flights between the capital of Peru and San Jose International Airport.

Wednesday, August 28, 2013 reports that "On 17 May, Avianca announced changes to its services in Costa Rica, a measure that eliminated direct flights to Quito and Guayaquil, in South America, and also to Havana, the Cuban capital. On that occasion, the ICT acknowledged that it would affect, in some way, the arrival of visitors to Costa Rica and that it would negotiate with airlines in order to balance revenue. "

According to the manager of the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT), Juan Carlos Borbon, the airline is currently studying the cost of the route, the number of passengers, the competition and is liaising with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and with Costa Rican airport administrator.

The official also acknowledged that other airlines have been contacted in Chile, Argentina and Brazil because they believe that the South American market is still is not fully aware of Costa Rica as a destination.

New Flight Between Peru and Costa Rica

The airline LATAM has announced that from January 2018 it will be operating three weekly frequencies between Lima and San José.

From a statement issued by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute:

Hermes Navarro, Chief of Attraction of Airlines at the ICT, indicated that negotiations with this airline began last March 29, 2016, in Santiago, Chile, where they made firm the operation from Lima to San José, which has a natural connection with the destinations of Santiago de Chile (SCL), Buenos Aires, Argentina (BUE) and Sao Paulo, Brazil (SAO). Also, and depending on certain operational restrictions, it could efficiently connect with Montevideo, Uruguay (MVD), Asunción, Paraguay (ASU), Córdoba (COR), Rosario (ROS) and Mendoza (MDZ) in Argentina.

Starting November 16th, Cubana Airlines will operate two weekly flights between Havana and San Jose.

From a statement issued by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT):

Cubana Airlines has announced it will fly directly to Costa Rica, starting from 16th of November this year.

Recovery of San José's Air Connectivity

July 2014

New airlines and offers to add new frequencies would add by at least seven air routes to the current offer of air transportation from Costa Rica to Rio, Santiago and Havana.  

Civil Aviation has announced the opening of these air routes for mid-August and the eventual operation between San Jose-San Salvador by the Salvadoran company VECA.
