Costa Rica Publishes New Rules for Agrochemicals

The new regulations will come into force in July 2017 and state that pesticide registrations can be renewed for equal consecutive periods of ten years and must be processed in the six months prior to their expiration.

Friday, January 13, 2017

Agricultural entrepreneurs expect the new regulation published yesterday in the official newspaper La Gaceta to start solving bureaucratic problems that have affected the sector for years, as before now they had to wait several months to complete the process for registering products.

The new "Technical Regulations: Agricultural Inputs, Formulated Synthetic Pesticides, Technical Grade Active Ingredients, Adjuvants and Related Substances for Agricultural Use, Registration, Use and Control", will enter into force on July 13 this year.

The registry will be administered by the State Plant Health System (SFE), with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock being the relevant authority, but also involved in the process are the Ministries of Health and Environment and Energy, with ruling which will be binding for the SFE.

Among the advances included in the new regulations, is registration through incorporation of technical grade active elements that have already been registered in other member countries of the OECD.

See Regulations published in La Gaceta.
