Costa Rica: Poverty Increases to 21%

The number of households living in poverty increased by 1.1% between 2017 and 2018, increasing from 20% to 21.1% of the population.

Households living in poverty by poverty line (LP) represent 21.1% of the country's total, 1.1% more than the figure recorded in 2017. According to the National Institute of Census and Statistics, this increase is statistically significant.

The proportion of the population living in extreme poverty (those households whose income is not enough to cover basic food needs) increased by 0.6% to 6.3%.

The INEC report states that in absolute terms, households living in poverty are estimated at 328,848, of which 99,034 are in extreme poverty. Analyzing the results by planning region, the Central region has the lowest incidence of poverty (16.7%), in contrast the Brunca region is the most affected with 32.2% of households.

The only region that presented a decrease in the poverty level was the Central Pacific, which went from 29.9% in 2017 to 25.7% this year, while the Chorotega showed the largest increase, from 22.4% to 26.0% in the same period, both variations are statistically significant.

Costa Rica: Income Down, Poverty Up

In the context of the health and economic crisis that the country is suffering, between 2019 and 2020 the average income per household decreased by 12%, and the incidence of poverty increased from 21% to 26%.

The average income per household according to the 2020 National Household Survey (Enaho) is ₡891,934 per month ($1,487), which represents a variation of -12.2% from the previous year, when it was at ₡1,016,358 ($1,694).

Poverty in Costa Rica Does Not Fall Back

During 2019, the proportion of households living in poverty in the country remained at 21%, which is identical to the percentage reported in 2018.

According to the National Household Survey 2019, prepared by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses, per area of residence, urban poverty reaches 19.8% of households, while rural poverty reaches 24.2%, both values without significant changes with respect to 2018.

The monthly report of major national economic indicators has been released by the Foundation for the Development of Guatemala.

According to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) at republic level, prepared by the National Statistics Institute (INE), in July of 2011, it registered a value of 105.22, compared to 104.25 recorded last month, making the monthly variation 0.95%, while the cumulative increase to 31 July was 5.22%, which means that the price level rose during the month of December last year. The rate of change (change in July 2011 compared with the same month of 2010) stood at 7.04%, higher than that observed in July 2010.The main determinants of inflation products were agricultural products.
