Costa Rica: Potential Crisis in Notary Services

The Lawyer's Bar warned that chaos could ensue when the National Notary Directorate disappears on Monday.

Thursday, January 14, 2010

Neither the new Notary Code nor the Superior Notary Council are in effect yet. According to Éricka Hernández, from the Lawyer's Bar, this will leave a gap that will delay paperwork for mortgages, loans, divorces and several commercial transactions.

An article in Elfinancierocr.com reports that "the Bar expects some 7.000 notaries to be directly affected, and the population will not be able to settle loans, mortgages, family matters, etc, as the security papers used by notaries will expire in the following weeks, and no change or reposition will be available for the next two months".
