Costa Rica: Port Strike Ends

Less than 24 hours after it started union leaders signed an agreement with the Solis administration to end the strike that had paralyzed ports and the sale of fuels.

The strike called by major unions in the country lasted less than 24 hours and did not achieved the "historic" call aimed for by the organizers, who negotiated an end to the strike with the government around midnight on October 26.

Nacion.com reports that "... The agreement was signed at 12:35 am after several hours of meetings, the Government undertook to convene special sessions in the upcoming legislative record 19.312 known as the Living Wage Law for its respective debate and present Convention 184 of the International Labour Organisation. "

Jose Aponte, port manager of the Board of Port Administration and Economic Development of the Atlantic Coast (Japdeva), " said the docks ... Moin and Limon were not affected by the strike. 'In Moin, in the morning we had a ship unload and be dispatched; and in the afternoon, another vessel as well. In Limon, no loading or unloading was scheduled . We have to determine whether or not to cut wages of those who joined in the protest.'"

Although in court the strike was declared illegal, the government compromised on not discounting from wages for the days not worked by the strikers in return for lifting of the strike.

After managing to avoid wage deductions for having been absent from their duties for 15 days, the Workers Syndicate of Japdeva (Sintrajap) agreed to suspend the strike and resume duties as normal today at the ports of Limon and Moin.

Panama Canal Strike Ends

Workers have accepted the wage proposal made by the ICA-FCC-MECO consortium and resumed excavating the last stretch of the access channel to the Pacific.

After almost a week of work stoppage in the last stretch of riverbed on the access channel through the Pacific, workers agreed to resume work after negotiating a series of agreements with the consortium made up of the Mexican Ingenieros Civiles Asociados, the Spanish Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas and the Costa Rican firm Meco.

Panama: Talks Between Employers and Construction Union Break Down

After weeks of conflict, the parties have ended talks and left resolution of the problem in the hands of the Ministry.  

The Trade Union of Construction Workers and Similar (Suntracs) and the Panamanian Chamber of Construction (CAPAC) confirmed that the Ministry of Labor and Workforce Development (Mitradel) will have to mediate between the two parties, once the round of negotiations has been suspended.
