Costa Rica: Official Newspaper Only Available Online

As of July 1, 2013, La Gaceta, the official newspaper of Costa Rica, will be released exclusively in digital format, only accessible via the Internet.

It is the end of an era of 135 years of print editions, the official newspaper of Costa Rica, La Gaceta, will be printed and distributed for the last time on June 28.

In an article in Elfinancierocr.com Jorge Vargas, director of the newspaper, says "With this measure, the paper will save $2 million a year. Using the paper format means contaminating the environment. These are administrative decisions being taken. The office in the Registro Nacional in Curridabat, will close in August. There will be no layoffs because, when migrating to the digital version of La Gaceta, all of the workers have been trained to become part of the staff. There will be people who will explain to users what are the procedures to be followed to access our web services, since all processing will be done online. "

Costa Rica's Arias achieves positive ratings in opinion poll

As President Oscar Arias nears the halfway mark of his four-year administration, 44 percent of those questioned in an opinion poll rated his performance as "good".

A further 42 percent rated the Arias presidency as "regular", while only 13 percent described it as bad, according to a Demoscopía poll for the newspaper Al Día.
