The 27 kilometers of road should be constructed by December 2014, if there is not more than the usual amount of rain, which would delay the works.
According to Alejandro Molina, director of MOPT, the project will cost $52.4 million and will reduce by 60 km the distance by road between Vuelta Kooper of San Carlos and Bajos de Chilamate de Sarapiquí.
According to an article in Nacion.com, the work will facilitate the transfer of goods between Limon and the northern Guanacaste. It is estimated that 1,500 containers will use the route every day carrying wood, pineapple, tubers, roots and fertilizers, among other things.
Alfredo Aguilar, of the Exclusive Economic Zone of the North Huetar said they have fought for this project for the past seven years, "is now vital to boost in the area a freight train, a business park and an airport", he added.
Having submitted a bid of $50 million, the construction firm Sánchez Carvajal will build the road between Bajos de Chilamate and the town of Vuelta Kooper.
The construction of this road is considered strategic because it will shorten the distance between Bajos de Chilamate in Sarapiqui and Vuelta Kooper in San Carlos by 69%, from a distance of 87.32 km to 27.09 km and increase current average speeds of 50 km/h to 80km/h, taking a straighter and less mountainous route.
