Costa Rica: Hotel Occupancy Projected Above 70%

The tourism sector expects the start of high season to represent an increase in hotel occupancy.

According to a survey by the National Chamber of Tourism (CANATUR), an average 74% occupancy rate is projected for the first two weeks of the season, ranging from the 15th to the 30th of December.

The study was conducted to 91 hotels from December 1st through December 6th.

The results have a margin of error of 8.6% and a confidence level of 95%.

Results indicate that Monteverde has the best occupancy estimate for the start of high season with 84% followed by Central Pacific with 83.5% and the Northern Plains with an estimate of 81.8%. The rest of the tourist regions estimate occupancy levels greater than 50% of the total hosting capacity.

Low Hotel Occupancy in 2013 in Costa Rica

The average occupancy rate in 2013 in the country's hotels was less than 50%, the lowest in the last five years.

Figures from the Costa Rican Tourism Institute indicate that the average occupancy rate during 2013 was 48.7%, the lowest since 2009, when the international crisis started, resulting in a significant reduction in the flow of foreign tourists coming to the country.

In September and October hoteliers reduce or close their operations due to the low levels of occupancy recorded at this time of year.

Many of these companies send their employees on training courses or terminate their contracts as occupancy levels in these two months are at the lowest of the year.

Tourist activity for the start of the season and end of year 2011 recorded a 70.6% average hotel occupancy according to the results of a survey conducted by the National Chamber of Tourism.

Costa Rica Expects Moderate Hotel Occupancy

November 2010

Projections for the months of November and December are 53% and 57% respectively.

For the same period in 2009 numbers were 44% and 52.6% in November and December.

"Before the financial crisis, the average occupancy in November 2008 was 60.6% in November and 51.5% in December.
