Costa Rica Hopes to Grow Medical Tourism

Competing with giants like Mexico and Brazil, Costa Rica managed to attract 40,000 health tourists in 2010 and hopes to attract more with a variety of value added medical tourism offers.

Emphasizing treatments for Parkinsons, drug addiction, alcoholism and stress, including holistic therapies, Costa Rica is aiming to maximise opportunities in medical tourism, which attracted some 40,000 visitors in 2010, according to the Council for International Promotion of Medicine in Costa Rica (Promed).

The aim of Costa Rica is to be one of the major Latin American destinations for medical tourism from Canada and the United States, although it faces serious competition from Brazil and Mexico.

According to an article in Nacion.com, "these visitors spend six times more than traditional tourists spend (who come to the country for its beaches or forests) and are educated to university level with average annual income of $99,500, indicated the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT). "

In the 'cluster' of this sector there are around 300 companies involved, hotels, hospitals, clinics, recovery centers, and tour operators, generating some 20,000 jobs directly and indirectly, according to Massimo Manzi, the executive director of Promed.

Businessmen and officials hope to highlight the wide range of traditional treatments for diseases, new therapies, and quality standards in the Latin American Medical Tourism Congress to be held at the Hotel Real Intercontinental, from 23rd to 25th of April.
