Costa Rica: Exports Continue to Rise

At the end of 2017, the country accumulated $10,665 million from exports, 7% more than in 2016, in line with the upward trend reported since 2014.

The Costa Rica Foreign Promotion Office (Procomer) reported that " ... exports of accumulated goods at the end of 2017 registered a considerable increase, adding up to $10,665 million, the highest amount in five years. This amount exceeded by 7% the exports accumulated in 2016 ($9,937 million) and was 15% higher than the average of the last four previous years ($9,235 million). "

The report notes that the products " ... which drove that behavior were: pineapple, sugar, tires and bananas, among other things. "

The document states that "... For its part, free zone exports totaled $5,178 million, a figure that was 9.2% higher than the amount registered in 2016 and covered 48.6% of total exports."

In Guatemala, sales abroad totaled $8.147 million up to September, 3% less than in the first nine months of 2017.

The Banco de Guatemala reports that the total amount of General Commerce exports was at US$8,147.4 million, lower by US$220.5 million (-2.6%) to the registered up to September 2017 (US$8,367.9 million).

The five fastest growing products in the exportable offer in the third quarter of 2017 covered 45% of total exports and were medical devices, sugar, pineapple, parts for transmitters and receivers for televisions, radios and the like, and bananas.

Costa Rica: Improving Export Figures

September 2017

Exports accumulated between January and August of this year grew by 9% compared to the same period in 2016, going from $6.618 million to $7.19 billion.

Procomer statistics indicate that the accumulated amount of $7.19 billion is the highest in the last five years. Exports made by companies operating under the free zone regime increased by 13%, while those outside of the special regime increased by 4%.

Pineapples, bananas and medical devices led exports in 2015, with the most imported goods being diesel and special use cars.

In 2015, exports totaled $9.4 billion, compared to 2014 when the figure was $11.2 billion, registering an annual reduction of 16%.
