Costa Rica: Buffalo Products Gain Market

In the last fifteen years, the herd in the country has grown 300%, and it is reported that in some store chains the demand for meat and other buffalo products exceeds the supply.

Between 2004 and 2019, the number of buffaloes has increased considerably, from 3,000 to 12,000 heads, and according to estimates by the National Technical University (NTU), there are currently some 270 production farms in the country.

Rodrigo Sánchez, manager of the Auto Mercado Fresh Produce Department, stated that "... buffalo mozzarella and other types of this type of cheese are sold. They also offer traditional cuts of raw buffalo meat, meatballs and marinated meat cakes, which are very well accepted by customers."

Nacion.com reports that "... the supermarket chain Auto Mercado, an ally of the sector in the distribution of products, explained that the demand for buffalo meat at their sales points is surpassing the supply. The chain said that even has not yet the product in all supermarkets despite there is demand."

According to businessmen, in the Costa Rican market is reported a sustained growth in demand for sausages, prepared meats and processed products, but in dairy products the rise in consumption is slower.

The figures presented in the National Dairy Congress in Costa Rica, held in October, indicate that demand for dairy products grew at a rate of 6.5% last year, driven by increased demand for products such as yogurt in its different presentations, milk formula and cheese, among things.
