Costa Rica Approves Trade Agreement with Mexico

The Legislature approved the Free Trade Agreement between Mexico and the Republics of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. A statement by the Legislature:

Del comunicado de la Asamblea Legislativa:

Con 42 votos a favor y 3 en contra, los diputados aprobaron en su trámite de segundo debate el expediente 18368 Ley de Aprobación del Tratado de Libre Comercio entre los Estados Unidos Mexicanos y las Repúblicas de Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua, suscrito en San Salvador.

En este sentido el diputado José María Villalta Florez-Estrada, manifestó que este tratado tiene varias modificaciones, en el caso de Costa Rica fue un primer acuerdo comercial de esta nueva generación que el país suscribió y fue aprobado por la Asamblea Legislativa a mediados de la década de los noventa.

Costa Rica Approves FTAs with Singapore and Mexico

January 2013

The Legislature has approved on the first reading the FTA with Singapore and the modernization of the Free Trade Agreement with Mexico.

A statement from the Foreign Trade Ministry (COMEX) reads:

On 21 December last year the Legislature approved, on first reading, the FTA with Singapore and the modernization of the Free Trade Agreement with Mexico.

Unified FTA with Mexico Takes Effect

The first countries to enforce this Unified Agreement will be El Salvador, Nicaragua and Mexico and the other countries of the region are still in the process of ratification with the Legislature.

A press release from the Ministry of Economy of El Salvador (Minec) reads:

Mexico could allow privileges to those products in connection with the unification of the FTA.

In return, it requested access to CA of its dairy products, cars, avocado, steel and white corn.

Guatemalan Vice Minister of Foreign Trade, Raul Trejo, told Sigloxxi.com, "We must be aware that in negotiations you not always getting what you ask for; sometimes you need to yield in some areas.

Second Round of Unified FTA with Mexico

August 2010

Yesterday the second round of negotiations began to unify the various agreements Central American countries have signed with Mexico.

The objective is to unify the different agreements signed by Nicaragua, Costa Rica and the "Northern Triangle" (Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador) into one single Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
