$52 million for Agricultural Market in Costa Rica

Construction has been announced of a regional market in Guanacaste, including 36 stalls for fruits and vegetables, 16 for basic grains and meats 7 bitemperated storage cupboards and 2 freezer tunnels.

From a statement issued by the Presidency of the Republic:

The Legislative Assembly approved in the first debate, the bill to fund the Chorotega Regional Market which will benefit 400,000 inhabitants of the 11 cantons of Guanacaste and Alajuela Upala in the towns of Paquera, Jicaral, Cóbano and Lepanto Puntarenas.

This law allows funding for implementation of the project, it will have an infrastructure of 50,855 sqm and a total construction cost of US $52.5 million; of which $48 million is from a loan granted by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and $4.5 million from the Comprehensive Agricultural Marketing Program (PIMA).

Slight Recovery of the Agricultural Sector

During August and September, Costa Rica's monthly agricultural activity index reported a 0.16% and 0.82% year-on-year increase, respectively, reversing the downward trend recorded in previous months.

Construction of Higher Institute of Agriculture Announced

The government has announced that the institution will have the capacity to accommodate a thousand students on courses related to the agricultural sector.

The President, Juan Carlos Varela Rodriguez, announced on Thursday the creation of a trust for the Higher Institute of Agriculture, in order to raise teaching there as part of a government policy to support the agricultural sector within the framework of the National Pact for Agriculture.

Agribusiness Conference in Honduras

On August 13th and 14th farmers from Honduras and Guatemala will meet in Tegucigalpa with buyers and exporting companies to explore business opportunities.

The meeting between producers and buyers, organized by AGEXPORT's AGRITRADE, will take place in Comayagua Golf Club Honduras' Hotel and Convention Center . It is expected that 110 Central American producers from 30 associations will take part.
