Costa Rica After Chinese Infrastructure Investment

The country has started negotiations with authorities from the Chinese government and financial institutions in order to access funding for two road extensions that will allow the transport of cargo between the Caribbean and the Pacific without going through the Central Valley.

While in the Asian country, the president of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla, told the newspaper La Nacion that the negotiations underway are the for the purpose of getting resources for the expansion works on the road connecting the port of Limon and Sarapiqui and the one linking Chilamate with Vuelta de Kooper in the north.

"Added to these two works would be a third, which would connect transit cargo with Peñas Blancas, located on the border with Nicaragua, which would be financed with funds from the Inter-American Development Bank (BCIE).
Together, the three works would establish a network of connections, like a 'dry canal', would could move large volumes of cargo between the two oceans without congesting traffic through the Central Valley", reported

Costa Rica: New Highway in North

Construction has begun of the highway between Vuelta Kooper in San Carlos and Bajos de Chilamate in Sarapiquí, which will facilitate the production output of the area to the port of Limón.

The 27 kilometers of road should be constructed by December 2014, if there is not more than the usual amount of rain, which would delay the works.

Sánchez Carvajal to Build Road in Costa Rica

Having submitted a bid of $50 million, the construction firm Sánchez Carvajal will build the road between Bajos de Chilamate and the town of Vuelta Kooper.

The construction of this road is considered strategic because it will shorten the distance between Bajos de Chilamate in Sarapiqui and Vuelta Kooper in San Carlos by 69%, from a distance of 87.32 km to 27.09 km and increase current average speeds of 50 km/h to 80km/h, taking a straighter and less mountainous route.

The Ministry of Public Works tenders construction of a new road between Chilamate and the town of Vuelta de Kooper.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT) will publish on Thursday the tender for the construction of a new highway between Bajos de Chilamate and Vuelta de Kooper, for a total of $ 52.45 million.

Projects include road construction at Bajos de Chilamate-Vuelta Kooper, widening of the Inter-American Highway, construction and rehabilitation of bridges as well as road maintenance.

The President and the Minister of MOPT, Francisco Jimenez, announced an international tender for the widening of the Inter-American Highway at the section between Cañas and Liberia (50.6km) and a tender to build the new road from Bajos de Chilamate Bajos de Chilamate en Sarapiquí y Vuelta de Kooper en San Carlos (27 km)in Sarapiquí to Vuelta de Kooper in San Carlos (27 km), which will be vital in connecting the Northern area of the country with the Caribbean.
