Corn in Central America: $685 Million in Business

From January to September 2019, companies in the region bought corn abroad for $685 million, 12% more than reported for the same period in 2018, a rise that is explained by the behavior of imports in Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala.

Central American Companies Purchase More
Between the first nine months of 2018 and the same period in 2019, the total value of corn imports into Central America increased by 12%, from $612 million to $685 million. As for the volume imported, it also reported an increase, in this case from 2.84 million tons to 3.25 million tons.

Five of the six countries recorded year-on-year increases in their purchases. In Nicaragua imports increased 31%, while in El Salvador, Guatemala and Costa Rica the increases were 27%, 15% and 10%, in that order. Honduras was the other market that increased its purchases, in this case by 3%.

Panama was the only market that registered a negative variation, which amounted to -10.8%.

Price of Imports
In recent years the price has shown a downward trend, with a 40% decrease for the period October 2012 to September 2019, falling from $0.35 per kilo to $0.21 per kilo.

Imports by Country
From January to September, the main buyer according to the value of corn imports in Central America continued to be Guatemala with $205 million, followed by Costa Rica with $141 million, El Salvador with $126 million, Honduras with $105 million, Panama with $67 million and Nicaragua with $42 million.

Corn imports from the countries of the region reached $168 million between January and March of this year, 6% more than what was reported in the same period of 2017.

Price of Imported Corn Drops 56%

April 2018

Between February 2013 and December 2017, the average price of a kilo of corn imported into Guatemala has been on a downward path, falling from $0.43 to $0.19.
