Convention Tourism Growing in Panama

The sixty events held this year generated revenues of $300 million for the country.

Occupancy rates in hotels, shops and spending power are some of the benefits these kinds of conventions have generated for the Panamanian tourism industry.

So said Minister of the Panamanian Tourism Authority, Solomon Shamah, who released results regarding this segment of the tourism sector which has grown so much in the last few months.

Thanks to promotional efforts, which included a guarantee that Atlapa Convention Center be free, more companies chose Panama to host their events this year.

In an article in Panamaamerica.com.pa, the minister said that "the outlook for the coming year is encouraging and so far events have been scheduled that will produce bookings for 95,065 nights in hotels in the city alone.

In order to continue creating added value, he said that a tender will soon be created for a new convention center to be built in the area of Amador, at the end of the third stage of the Cinta Costera, considered one of the sectors with the greatest potential for tourism development. "

No Offers for Atlapa Convention Center

The auction of the 56 thousand square meters of land that houses the convention center received no bids, therefore a second call has been announced.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) has estimated that the price of the property is around $123.3 million.

In the event that no bids are received on a second call, the property would be passed to the MEF to decide what to do next, said Solomon Shamah, administrator of the Panama Tourism Authority (ATP).

Conventions Fuel Tourism in Panama

On average, each person attending a convention injects $300 per day into the Panamanian economy, for accommodation, shopping, food and transport.

According to the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP), since the beginning of last year up until now there have been approximately 200 conferences in the country. The conventions in 2012 alone generated for the country between $45 and $50 million in foreign exchange.

In order to finance the construction of a new convention center, the Panamanian government has decided to sell Atlapa.

The first step will be to negotiate a sale with tourist groups so that the center can be retained, then if this venture is not successful a best value tender will be created.
