The road work awarded to PowerChina in 2018 consists of a total of 50 kilometers, distributed in two tenders, one for the San Gerardo-Limonal section and the other for the Barranca-San Gerardo section. For the first four companies submitted tenders and the contract was awarded on October 25, while for the second there were seven proposals and the contract was awarded on December 10.

Among the companies participating in the tenders are Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina) and the Costa Rican consortium Meco-HSolís, with global bids of $218.3 million and $208.9 million.

After both contracts were awarded to PowerChina, appeals were filed against the result. Nacion.com reports that "... The award to PowerChina for San Gerardo-Barranca was annulled on January 24, 2019 because the General Comptroller of the Republic declared with claims raised in appeals. The resolution of objections for San Gerardo-Limonal is pending."

The article adds that "... Aside from San Gerardo-Limonal and Barranca-San Gerardo, in January 2018 the 20 km section Cañas-Limonal was awarded, which is already under construction. The three advertisements asked suppliers to prove an average turnover in the last five years of at least $45 million in construction work or road improvements. Cañas-Limonal was awarded under these conditions. However, in April and June last year (one month before the opening of the tender), the executing unit changed this requirement for the other two sections: San Gerardo-Limonal and Barranca-San Gerardo."

Costa Rica: $183 Million in Road Works Awarded

March 2020

Hernan Solis SRL and Ingenieria Estrella S.A. won the contract to widen 50 kilometres of the road from Barranca to Limonal, and 3 kilometres from La Angostura, between El Roble and Barrio El Carmen, in the province of Puntarenas.

The works on the Interamericana Norte will last 30 months, from the start order, while the extension of La Angostura should be ready in a 12 months’ period, informed the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT).

$48 million Road Works Contract Awarded

In Panama, a contract has been awarded to Constructora MECO for the design and construction of 80 kilometers of streets and roads in the district of David, province of Chiriqui.

The companies that took part in the tender for the renovation of road sections were Constructora MECO, Sacyr Construction, China Railway International Group, Bagatrac S.A., Ininco, S.A., Conalvias Construcciones S.A.S., Constructora Urbana and Construcciones Civiles y Concretos de Panamá S.A., with offers of $48 million, $49 million, $24 million, $25 million, $54 million, $53 million and $26 million respectively. 

Panama: $88 Million Road Works Awarded

A contract has been awarded to Constructora MECO for the design, construction and maintenance of works for the renovation of the Transístmica highway, section Plaza Agora - San Isidro Station.

The companies that took part in the tender for the renovation of a stretch of approximately 10 kilometers were Constructora MECO, Sacyr Construcción, Constructora Urbana and Conalvias Construcciones, with offers of $88 million, $86 million, $87 million and $90 million, respectively.

$543 million Contract Awarded for Road Works Project

November 2017

In the tender to expand a 36-kilometer stretch of road in Panama to six lanes, the consortium formed by FCC Construcción and Operadora CICSA submitted an offer for $543 million, while MECO and Constructora Urbana, offered $624 million.

China Communications Construction Company, LTD also participated in the tender "Extension to six lanes - Corredor de las Playas - Section 1: La Chorrera - Santa Cruz", but its proposal was disqualified for not meeting the minimum required score.
