With an investment of $30 million, construction has begun on the 360 meter bridge which connects Nicaragua to Costa Rica by road.

A press release from El Pueblo Presidente reads:

The 360-meter bridge over the Rio San Juan connects Nicaragua to Costa Rica. Construction of the bridge has begun and is being managed by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

This project has been made possible by a $30 million donation from the Japanese government. The Asian country, despite having suffered the tragedy of an earthquake and tsunami on 11 March this year, continues to cooperate unconditionally with Nicaraguans.

The viaduct is located between San Carlos, Rio San Juan department, and the Las Tablillas community, near the source of the river itself. It also connects with the Acoyapa-San Carlos highway.

The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Pablo Fernando Martinez said the project will be of commercial benefit for Nicaragua and Costa Rica, and will ensure a greater flow of international freight in the area.

"The bridge is designed to support cargo being transported by international land transport, to facilitate navigation on the Rio San Juan and exports to Costa Rica. The project is expected to be completed in 36 months", said Martinez.

The official also explained that the bridge's height of up to 40 meters will allow any vessel to navigate under it.

Katsuyuki Enoki, project manager of the Japanese construction company Hazama, said the preliminary works relate to excavations needed to build the concrete beams that will serve as the foundations, and that they are 19 percent complete.

"We have now started on the structural work of the bridge, it has a width of 11 meters and a length of over 360 meters, and should be completed in April 2014", said Enoki.
