Construction in the Region: The Most Important Projects in 2017

Details of the most relevant construction projects by country in terms of investment, for which environmental impact studies were submitted at the end of the third quarter of this year.

Details of the most important projects by country:

In Panama, Martino Inc. submitted an EIA in July to build a thermoelectric plant with a combined cycle configuration capable of generating up to 450 Mw of power in the town of Puerto Pilón, province of Colón. The project is called "Gas To Power Panama" and according to the study approximately $900 million will be invested in it.

The Costa Rican Instituto Costarricense de Acueductos y Alcantarillados Nacional (National Aqueduct and Sewer Institute) also submitted an EIA in July to build, in Desamparados, San José, a water catchment system to make potable water and then distribute it. The project is called "Fifth Extension of the Metropolitan Aqueduct" and according to the document approximately $326 million will be invested.

In Nicaragua, the Spanish Group Isolux Corsan submitted an EIA to build a 5-story hospital with a basement in San Vicente, León province. The project is called "Hospital San Vicente" and according to the study the amount of investment foreseen is $85 million.

In Guatemala, the Petroleum Company of Itsmo, S.A. submitted an EIA to drill new wells and build related works in the municipality of Chisec, Alta Verapaz. According to the document submitted in March, an investment of $54 million is foreseen.

In El Salvador, Los Izotes S.A. de C.V. submitted an EIA to build a residential development in Antiguo Cuscatlán, department of La Libertad. The project is called "Cumbres de Mirasol Urban Complex" and its EIA was handed in in August. The estimated investment is $70 million

Ferrocarril Nacional de Honduras (the Honduran National Railway) submitted an EIA to build a museum that will have several amenities, on a 2.5-acre lot in El Progreso, Yoro department.The study of the project called "Ferroviario Museum, El Progreso Yoro" was delivered in July, and an investment of $11 million is foreseen.

Guatemala: $55 million in Residential Projects

In August 2017, three construction projects were processed, comprising seven towers with 547 apartments, all to be developed in Guatemala City.

September 2017

Details of the ten most valuable construction projects in terms of investment, for which environmental impact studies were submitted in the last year.

Of the 10 largest construction projects submitted to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources between August 2016 and July 2017, six environmental projects were processed in the department of Guatemala, with an estimated investment of $181 million. In terms of investment value, they were followed by two in Alta Verapaz, with an investment of close to $77 million, one in Chimaltenango, with an investment of $16 million, and another in Santa Rosa with an estimated investment of $15 million.
