Costa Rica construction booms despite gloom in US

The number of building permits issued in the first quarter in Costa Rica was 11 percent up on the same period of last year, as a construction boom gains strength.

The College of Architects and Engineers issues permits for each construction project in Costa Rica. Between January and September 2009, they received requests for 4.16 million square meters of construction, 42% less than the same period of 2008.

The San Carlos region of Costa Rica, long a favorite of tourists, is fast becoming a top location for companies, especially those in the food and services sector, and construction is booming as a result.

Growth in commerce and real estate began in 2006, when 1,328 building permits were issued. Last year the total rose to 1,764, and a new record is looming in 2008.

Costa Rica raid finds scant regard for environment in tourist zone

Three construction projects were halted and more than 50 land-strips illegally divided into building plots were uncovered when Costa Rican environmental inspectors launched a second raid in the popular tourist zone of Guanacaste.

Inspectors found that land was being moved and trees burned down to make way for hotels and golf courses.
