Conference Zones in Panama

From 12 to 14 November representatives from free zones in Latin America will be gathering together in Panama City to discuss issues such as changes in legislation and the role of free zones in the logistics chain.

The topics to be discussed range from innovation and new business in free zones and industries to changes to key legislation for the creation of logistic nodes. Conferences have also been scheduled for specific industries such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, agribusiness, and oil, among others.

Participation is expected of various international representatives such as Mohammed Al Zarooni, Director General of the Dubai Free Zone, Daniela Isaza, who represents the free zones of the isthmus, Isodoro Hondara, president of the Free Zone of Uruguay and Edgar Martinez, general manager of the Chamber of free Zones, among others.

Free Zone Companies in Guatemala Continue to Close Down

The private sector has denounced the fact that 67 companies have already closed or are in the process of leaving the free zone regime because of the implications of the Emergent Employment Act.

With the Emergent Act for Conservation of Employment, rules for enterprise zones have changed, prohibiting them from carrying out 42 activities, among them some related medicines, electronics, cosmetics, animal feed, leather and footwear, plastics, toys, building materials, furniture and importing machinery and equipment.

On July 10th, representatives from companies the free zone regime will meet to discuss issues such as investments outside of the greater metropolitan area and production chains.

In addition to the issue of productive chains generated by companies operating under the free zone regime, discussion will take place on other topics such as opening free zones in areas which are less developed and more remote from the greater metropolitan area, where the majority of the sites offering this tax incentive scheme are located .

Promotion of Free Zones in Panama

The Panamanian government has organized an event to promote and share experiences among free trade zones in the country.


In order to promote the national and international advances the country has made by implementing and using the free zone regime, the government has opened the first forum on the subject, called "The Present and Future of Free Zones."

There is concern about the incentives to be received after 2015 when benefits expire according to World Commerce Organization provisions.

The Government wants to ensure these conditions through a reform of the free zone law aimed at attracting investment.

However, its early yet and the possibility of taking it to Congress for a vote seems far off.
