Colombia To Waive Commercial Restrictions For Panama

On February 2010, Colombia will waive a series of restrictions in place since 2007 which affected re-exports originating from the Colon Free Zone in Panama.

These restrictions affected apparel, textile and footwear.

Additionally, both countries will begin negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement next year.

Roberto Herníquez, Panamanian Commerce Minister, explained in a press conference: "Such trade agreement will allow unified regulations to guarantee government purchases, investment and commercial exchange of goods and services", reported Laestrella.com.pa.

According to Luis Germán Gómez, vice president of the Association of Members of the Colon Free Zone, Panama is maintaining its position that Colombia should lift restrictions on the entry of goods from the zone.
