Coffee: Which Markets Are Most Profitable?

Although the U.S. is the main buyer of Guatemalan coffee, data from the exporters' guild indicate that South Korea is one of the markets that pays the best prices for the grain, while Italy pays one of the lowest prices.

#Although the main buyer of Guatemalan coffee is the United States, there are indications that Asian countries tend to appreciate Guatemalan coffee more, paying a higher price for it, notes the report "Guatemalan Coffee: A Focus on the World Market and Its Productivity.

The document of the Association for Research and Social Studies (ASIES) states that "... According to export figures published in March 2018 by Anacafé, one of the main exporting countries is South Korea, the country that best paid for coffee with an average price of US$ 172.01 per quintal of green coffee. While Italy paid the worst for coffee with an average price of US$ 140.57 per quintal."

The analysis concludes that "... Maintaining the competitive strategy of differentiation with superior quality - taking advantage of the country's geographical conditions and climate - seems to be the path that Guatemalan coffee should follow."

According to reports from CentralAmericaData in the first semester of 2018 the main coffee exporter in Central America was Honduras, with $830 million, followed by Guatemala, with $474 million, Nicaragua, with $322 million, Costa Rica with $228 million, El Salvador, with $83 million and Panama with $11 million.

The report adds that from January to June last year 34% of the value exported from Central America was to the U.S., 16% Germany, 15% Belgium, 6% Italy and 4% Japan.

Guatemalan Coffee in Germany

The coffee growers' guild signed an agreement with the Guatemalan-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry to promote local production in the European country.

Directors of the National Coffee Association (Anacafé) explained that the agreement will facilitate the coordination of actions for the promotion and export of coffee from Guatemala to Germany, such as the generation of direct links between producers and buyers.

Last year coffee sales in Central American countries totaled $3.035 million and grew by 27% compared to 2016, in contrast to the fall recorded between 2015 and 2016.

Guatemalan Coffee Betting on Emerging Markets

According to the union of exporters, for 2018 the destinations that represent potential opportunities for special coffees are Taiwan, China, Australia, Malaysia, Czech Republic and Chile.

In the case of the Chilean market, the first multisectorial trade mission led by the Department of Market Development and Commercial Promotion of the Guatemalan Association of Exporters (Agexport) was carried out in 2017, in which more than 50 commercial appointments were attended, showing high interest for the special coffees of Guatemala.
