Coffee: Nicaragua Main Exporter in 2020

In 2020, Nicaragua was positioned as the largest exporter of Central America with $440.1 million, in addition, the main buyer of coffee was the United States with 35.53% equivalent to $832.7 million, followed by Germany with $330.1 million.

Nicaragua, Main Seller
During 2020 the main exporter of coffee in Central America was Nicaragua with $440.1 million, followed by Costa Rica with $329 million, El Salvador with $108.9 million and Panama with $24.9 million.

For the months in question, Costa Rica's foreign sales increased 17.7% in year-on-year terms.

Nicaragua reduced its exports by 4.4%, El Salvador decreased its sales by 0.3% and Panamanian sales fell by 5.8%.

Changes in Regional Exports
Between 2019 and 2020, the value exported from the region decreased by 6.09%, from $2,496 million to $2,344 million.

The year-on-year decline recorded in sales for the period under analysis is partly explained by the performance of exports to the U.S., which decreased from $899.9 million to $832.7 million.

Rising Export Prices
In recent months, the average price of regional coffee exports has registered a clear upward trend, rising from $2.72 per kilo in December 2019 to $3.37 in December 2020.

Destination of Exports
In 2020, 35.53% of the value exported from Central America was destined for the USA, 14.08% for Germany, 10.31% for Belgium, 5.38% for Japan, 5.33% for Canada and 5.06% for Italy.

Coffee: Still "Gold" in Central America?

July 2018

In the last six years the average export price of Central American coffee has been trending downwards, with the price per kilo falling from $4.51 in March 2012, to $3.10 in the same month in 2018.
