Clothing: $980 Million Business

From January to September last year, foreign purchases of clothing and accessories made by companies in Central America totaled $981 million, and 46% was imported from China and the United States.

Panamanian Companies, Main Buyers
In the first nine months of 2019 the main importer of clothing and accessories in Central America was Panama with $316 million, followed by El Salvador with $201 million, Costa Rica with $190 million, Guatemala with $152 million, Honduras with $95 million and Nicaragua with $27 million.

Variation in Regional Imports
Between January and September 2018 and the same period in 2019, the value of clothing imports into Central America decreased 4%, from $1,019 million to $981 million.

Main Suppliers
For the months in question in 2019, 28% of the value imported from Central America came from China, 19% from the United States, 2% from Spain and 2% from Bangladesh.

For the period under analysis over the last eight years, China has been the fastest growing market for imports, accounting for 15% of total Central American purchases in 2012 and 28% in 2018.
