Chinese Fridges Gaining Ground in Central America

In recent years refrigerators and freezers from China have gained importance in terms of the amount purchased, as in the first half of 2012 represented 7% of total regional imports and for the same period of 2020 the proportion rose to 28%.

Guatemalan Companies, main buyers
In the first six months of 2020 the main importer was Guatemala, with $41 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $39 million, Honduras, with $28 million, Panama, with $23 million, El Salvador, with $22 million and Nicaragua, with $12 million.

For the period in question, Nicaragua and Costa Rica were the markets in which purchases recorded year-on-year increases, amounting to 22% and 9%, respectively.

In the remaining four countries, imports fell. In El Salvador 16%, in Honduras 22%, in Guatemala 25% and in Panama 41%.

Variation in Regional Imports
Between the first half of 2019 and the same period of 2020 the value imported in the region recorded a decrease of 18%, from $200 million to $165 million.

For the periods in question purchases from Thai companies grew 63%, rising from $1.9 million to $3.1 million.

Mexico and China, Main Sellers
In the first six months of the year, 29% of the value of imports from Central America came from Mexico, 28% from China, 15% from the U.S. and 7% from Colombia.

China is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most for the period in question in recent years, as in 2012 it accounted for 7% of the total value purchased, and by 2020 that proportion rose to 28%.

The equipment included in this analysis are fridges and freezers for domestic and industrial use, cabinets, chests, showcases and cold production furniture, horizontal and vertical chest or cabinet type freezers and other machines or appliances for the production of cold. Air conditioning equipment is not included in the figures of the report.

During the first half of 2019, Central American companies imported $200 million in fridges and freezers, and purchases from companies in Mexico grew 6% over the same period in 2018.

Fridges: Purchases from China Still Rising

September 2019

During the first quarter of 2019, Central American companies imported $96 million in fridges and freezers, and purchases from companies in China were up 20% compared to the same period in 2018.
