From a statement issued by the Foreign Trade Promotion Office of Costa Rica (PROCOMER):

As banana consumption by Chinese people increases, importers are expanding the areas from which this fruit is provided. Goodfarmer, one of the largest importers of bananas in the country, has just responded to robust demand with plans to increase the amount of fruit imported from Ecuador.

"In 2014, we will be importing nearly 100,000 tons of fruit per year," predicts Owen Zhang, general manager of the Department of Goodfarmer Bananas. "Almost 60% comes from the Philippines, 39% from Ecuador, and the rest of Indonesia. But we will import more from Ecuador in the future, because this is the first year we have imported from Ecuador. " He notes that the average annual consumption of bananas is more than nine kilos per person in the world, and although it is only five kilos per person in China, banana consumption in this country is growing.
