Ceramic Products: Increasing Trade with Spain

In the first quarter of the year Central America imported $90 million worth of ceramic products, and purchases from the European country grew by 3% compared to the same period in 2017.

Imports by country 
In the first three months of 2018 the main importer of ceramic products in Central America was Costa Rica, with $21 million, followed by Panama and Guatemala, with $18 million each, El Salvador and Honduras, with $11 million each and Nicaragua, with $10 million.

Variation of regional imports 
Between the first quarter of 2017 and the same period in 2018, the value imported into the region decreased by 11%, falling from $101 million to $90 million. 

Contrary to the general behavior of regional imports, for the periods in question, Central American purchases from Spain grew by 3%, rising from $11.3 million to $11.7 million. 

Origin of imports 
From January to March, 28% of the value imported into the region came from China, 15% from Mexico, 13% from Spain and 10% from Brazil. 

Spain is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most in the first quarter of the last seven years, as in 2012 it represented 2% of the total value purchased, and in 2018 that proportion rose to 8%. 

Note: This analysis includes ceramic products such as tiles, glazed tiles, sinks, bathtubs, domestic porcelain articles, brick and porcelain tiles, ceramic tiles and others.
