Guatemala, Main Buyer
In 2020, the leading importer of ceramic products in Central America was Guatemala with $83.2 million, followed by Costa Rica with $71 million, El Salvador with $53.2 million, Honduras with $46.4 million, Panama with $36.5 million and Nicaragua with $26 million.

During 2020, imports from all markets decreased in year-on-year terms. Purchases from Panama decreased by 51.7%, from Honduras by 19.97%, from El Salvador by 13.79%, from Costa Rica by 5.67% and from Guatemala by 4.98%. Only Nicaragua's purchases increased by 6.61%.

Regional Imports Down
Between 2019 and the same period of 2020, the value imported in the region decreased by 13.55%, decreasing from $364.9 million to $315.4 million.

Main Suppliers to the Central American Market
In 2020, the main import value in the region came from China with 23.91%, Guatemala with 15.45%, 14.1% from Spain, 12.66% from Mexico, 9.08% from Brazil and 4.36% from Colombia.

Spain is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most during the last few years, since in 2012 it represented 7.44% of the total value purchased, and in 2020 that proportion rose to 14.1%.

During 2020, Guatemala continued to be the main buyer of soaps and cleaning preparations in the Central American region with $59.4 million, the supplier market was Honduras with $83.2 million, which is equivalent to 65.52%.

Ceramic Products: Increasing Trade with Spain

In the first quarter of the year Central America imported $90 million worth of ceramic products, and purchases from the European country grew by 3% compared to the same period in 2017.
