Central America Importing More Bottled Water

In 2017, companies in the region bought $24 million worth of bottled water from abroad, 11% more than was reported in 2016, and 53% came from the United States.

Imports by country 
In 2017, the main importer of bottled water in Central America was Panama, with $11 million, followed by El Salvador, with $4 million, Costa Rica, with $3 million, and Honduras, Nicaragua and Guatemala, with $2 million each. 

Variation of regional imports  
Between 2016 and 2017 the import value of bottled water in Central America increased by 11%, rising from $21 million to $24 million. 

In the years between 2013 and 2017, regional purchases abroad have grown steadily at an annual average of 17%. Regarding the monthly import value, the graph shows a clear upward trend for the months between January 2012 and December 2017.

Origin of imports 
In 2017, 53% of the value imported into the region came from the USA, 5% from France, 4% from Italy, 2% from Spain and 1% from Mexico.

The USA it is the origin market for imports that has grown the most, since in 2012 it represented 33% of total regional purchases and in 2017 this figure reached 53%.

In the first quarter of the year, purchases of bottled water in Central America totaled $6.2 million, registering a reduction of 3% compared to the figures reported in the same period in 2017.
